What is an F1 hybrid seed?
A hybrid seed is the result of a controlled cross between two pure parent lines carrying complementary traits. The goal is to maximise the "combining ability" of the two parents in the first generation (F1): the resulting plant outperforms both parents in yield, uniformity, fruit quality and disease resistance. This "first-generation vigour" has been the backbone of commercial vegetable breeding worldwide for decades.
Hybrid vs. local (open-pollinated) seeds
Local seeds are well-adapted over the years, but because of open pollination the field is uneven: germination, plant size and maturity vary. A standard hybrid seed offers:
- High uniformity of plant and fruit — harvest in one or two passes;
- Higher yield per hectare (typically 30–80% more in good vegetable hybrids);
- Defined genetic resistance to common diseases (e.g. TMV, TYLCV, Fusarium, powdery mildew);
- Marketable fruit quality: shape, colour, firmness and shelf life.
Important: saving seed from an F1 hybrid gives an F2 generation that segregates genetically and loses quality — fresh seed must be purchased each season.
Why it matters for Iranian growers
Under water scarcity and disease pressure across much of Iran, choosing the right hybrid means "more productivity with the same inputs". Uniform plants manage water and fertiliser more efficiently, genetic resistance shortens spray programs, and uniform fruit earns better prices in wholesale and export markets.
How to choose the right variety
- Climate: heat-tolerant varieties for warm regions, early ones for temperate zones;
- Cultivation type: open field, greenhouse or dual — check the technical sheet;
- Target market: fresh consumption, processing or export defines shape and firmness;
- Local trial data: ask for pilot-trial results of the variety in your region.
